San Francisco — All performers on stage @ Asia SF

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

After our interesting introduction to local history on February 23, 2008, we had to switch hotels for one night and grabbed our overnight bags to move to The Handlery in downtown Geary Street, just next to Union Square. Composed of two earlier hotels, The Handlery today is an upscale hotel that is located right in the heart of San Francisco, just steps away from the cable cars, the theatres, the Museum of Modern Art, the Financial District and the Moscone Convention Center. Leisure and business travelers alike appreciate the location and amenities of this central hotel.

Our evening was promising a lot of excitement: we were planning to visit Asia SF, a restaurant/ night club that is a popular venue for birthday celebrations and bachelorette parties. This restaurant features upscale Cal Asian cuisine and a prize-winning wine list. What makes Asia SF unique is its catwalk, the domain of the beautiful and talented Ladies of Asia SF, all world famous gender illusionists.

Skip Young, one of the co-owners gave us an overview of this unique entertainment venue and indicated that several more locations are planned throughout North America, including Hollywood and Toronto. The Ladies graced us with stunning lip-synching and dance performances on the catwalk bar and I had a chance to interview several of them.

What stunned me the most was the diverse backgrounds of these talented performers: the Ladies hail from places such as the Philipines, Mexico, Peru and many others. Two of the performers I interviewed were students who work at Asia SF part-time, while another one works full-time for a local non-profit agency and another one is employed as a nurse as a local hospital. The Ladies are not only beautiful and intelligent, but they are also gracious and welcoming. They serve drinks to the audience and love to interact with the crowd and get their pictures taken. For the finale, six Ladies of Asia SF got up on the catwalk and surprised the enthusiastic crowd with a final performance of the day.

Can I have a domain (like www.domain.com) point to a folder on my web server, like (www.server.com/domain)?

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

I'd like to run another website on my web server. I want to use at least two unique domains. Basically, if someone enters the new domain, say domain.com, it's really accessing a folder on my server (say server.com/domain/, but the url looks like the user is on the domain.com website. I don't have web hosting software that manages multiple accounts like a professional reseller web host. Is there something I setup with the domain name company, and use like a "virtual host" or something like that?

It depends on what you're referring to when you say "my server".

Are we talking about a physical machine at your location? If so, then a specific answer will depend on the software. If Apache, then you'll want to learn the directives and look at the files in the "conf" directory.

http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/vhosts/
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/quickreference.html

If we're talking about a web hosting account, then if you have cPanel, you'll want to look at the Add-on Domain and possibly Parked Domain features.

Global Treasures JAIPUR India

Friday, January 30th, 2009

GTR-DVD-1182 - Along historic walls, numerous beautiful gates lead into the centre of Jaipur. The city’s well- preserved old town, built on the orders of Maharaja Jai Singh, gives the impression that it is almost exactly as it was at the time of its creation in 1727.

In the 18th century it was believed that both the city and palace were unlikely to encounter hostile attack but subsequent events prove this not to be so. Although a number of military defences existed in 1748, the city was attacked by the Maraths.

The exquisite residence of the Maharajas, the Hawa Mahal, otherwise known as the Palace Of The Wind, is now regarded as the finest architectural landmark in Jaipur. However, hiding beyond its magnificent honeycomb-like facade there is a simple staircase: for the building was the domain of the royal harem!

Outside the city, close to the route that led to the former capital of Amber, a fairytale-like castle rises up from a small artificial lake. The Jal Mahal was built in the 18th century by Madho Singh for the royal hunt.

Due to its many fascinating architectural and cultural treasures, Jaipur is deservedly one of the most popular travel destinations in India.

Global Treasures - History’s Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. Places as unique and diverse as the wilds of East Africa’s Serengeti, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Baroque cathedrals of Latin America make up our world’s heritage. Join us as we explore one of these protected monuments.

If my site is on a server offering shared certificates (SSL), how can my page have a unique name?

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Say I want to host with Yahoo. I want my domain name to be www.justme.com. I want to offer SSL level security.
Can I build the site in a way that the main site has my unique name, but the page with sensitive information is a subdomain of Yahoo www.justme.yahoo.com
Plse advise

Hi

I think you can do that. But I am not sure why you want to use yahoo when you have your own domain name. The better way is to use your domain name. This gives you a better edge.

I can suggest some of cost effective hosting companies

1. www.netandhost.com
2. www.melbourneit.com
2. www.verio.com

Universal Newsreel Featuring WWII Allied Convoy Battle

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

British newsreel footage about Allied ships battling Axis planes. Lots of big guns and explosions in this. Also, other stories about British royalty touring Scotland, inspecting a fire brigade and a daycare center. A British slice of life from World War II.
In the pre-TV era, people saw the news every week in their neighborhood movie theaters. Newsreels were shown before every feature film and in dedicated newsreel theaters located in large cities. Universal Newsreel, produced from 1929 to 1967, was released twice a week. Each issue contained six or seven short stories, usually one to two minutes in length, covering world events, politics, sports, fashion, and whatever else might entertain the movie audience. These newsreels offer a fascinating and unique view of an era when motion pictures defined our culture and were a primary source of visual news reporting.

Universal City Studios gifted Universal Newsreel to the American people, put the newsreels into the public domain, and gave film materials to the National Archives in 1976. Surviving materials from the entire collection are available at the National Archives and Records Administration in College Park, Maryland.

You can see more of these and WWI videos at USSMtMcKinley.Com….

Displeasures with Zelda: Twilight Princess for Wii

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Twilight Princess was an awesome game. It stopped becoming awesome at the point where you can no longer proceed until you catch a reekfish. I’m having a problem with this, guys.

UPDATE– Sweet. I’ve gotten, like, a bajillion responses from people who think I’m serious. Keep it up guys, because your unique responses on a game that I’ve already beaten are just invaluable.

And yes, I do have toilet paper hanging from the ceiling in my room. It’s practical! Really.
