Buying domains and IP address?
Hi,
If I want a domain name for myself say www.<a-name-not-used-so-far>.com , then how do I go about it?
Does the govt control assigning these domain names or the private units?
How do the private units collaborate among themselves to make sure of unique-ness of domain names..
Also what are the charges for it?
Can anybody buy a domain name..I mean any individual at home w/o any affiliation with any company etc..?
The organization that is responsible for over-seeing domain name registration is called ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers - www.icann.org). Companies pay a membership fee to become a domain registrar, which then sells the domain names on a yearly basis to the general public.
The steps to go about registering a domain name and using it for whatever purpose goes as follows:
1. Find a domain name registrar, and buy the domain name for a year (or more).
2. Find a service that will provide you Nameservers for your domain name (most registrars will provide you with nameservers or you can provide your own - I highly recommend going out on your own because registrar nameservers typically aren't great)
3. setup the different sub-domains for your domain to point to the ip addresses you want them to point to (sub domains are different names within your domain name, like www.*)
If you're using this for hosting a website or email, there are companies that can provide an all-inclusive solution and manage it for you for not a lot of money. One that comes to mind is www.sliqua.com

No the government does not control domain naims and no 2 domain names can be the same, price varies from peanuts to £20 uk ish deoending on the address you want… .com will cost more than .org.uk addresses as they are in higher demand.
There is a central database of internet addresses controlled by internics.
Yes anyone can buy a domain.
To get one, visit any host they have a page to allow you to register and pay for your domain…. easyspace.com is a prime example

no one owns the internet (US has got a little influence though.. because of it's contribution).
you can buy a yourname.com/net/org/name (these are tld's… top level domains) without any complications from godaddy.com or enom.com. they are ICANN accredited registrars. They have the control to access (add to/edit) the central databases that hold the info for these domains (registered by them). So if you're trying to register a domain that's registered elsewhere already, you're not allowed to register it. Each tld has a central database system where the domain dns server/owner info is stored.
similarly, there are domians assigned to each countries like .in for india, .us for USA so on…
you CANNOT have access to all tlds. There are some restrictions.like you can't create myname.gov or myname.edu (these make sense doesn't they??).
you can buy a domain for approx. $9 at namecheap.com ( it's professional and godaddy.com is full of sleazy graphics). You can also get the same for $5 at namecheap.com (price varies because of various factors).
you can even get a free (but cool) subdomains for free! Like yourname.a.la or yourname.undo.it. Go to http://freedns.afraid.org. Or, you can also try http://cjb.net.Just google/yahoo for more of these offers.
Also you cannot represent a domain name as http://www.<a-name-not-used-so-far>.com. Most people do this mistake. (here, www stands for service not a subdomain!)
there's a difference between 'yahoo.com' and 'www.yahoo.com'.
